» New Advice Zone Phone Number - 01443 482 540

A single number to contact the Advice Zone on any of USW’s four campuses. Save it to your phone now.

Advice Zones - New Phone Number

From Tuesday 9th January 2018 the Advice Zones on all four USW campuses will share the same phone number, 01443 482 540. This should simplify and speed up how you contact your Advice Zone by telephone.

When you call the number you will be asked which Advice Zone you would like to speak to. Please choose the Advice Zone at the campus where your course is based, either Cardiff, Glyntaff, Newport or Treforest.

The Advice Zones are usually open from 8.30am to 4.30pm Monday to Friday. If you’re not able to get through during these times it’s because all of our assistants are busy, and you’ll be able to leave a message. Please leave your name, your student number and a short message and we will return your call within 2 working days.

See Advice Zones for more information, including email addresses and physical locations.

» Love your Clothes with USW

USW is partnering with the Love Your Clothes campaign to help raise awareness of the amount of clothes that are discarded every year.

The campaign also aims to encourage students and staff to think about donating clothes they no longer wear, revamp and ‘upcycle’ their clothes and shop for pre-loved instead of buying new. Love Your Clothes will also be the focus for Employability Week for FCI students.

Love your Clothes

Developed in 2014, Love Your Clothes supports the existing Sustainable Clothing Action Plan (SCAP), which brings together UK clothing retailers, brands, suppliers, local authorities, recyclers, charities, trade bodies, academics and public sector bodies, to help reduce the carbon, water and waste impacts linked to clothing. USW is a supporter of SCAP.

Students and staff are encouraged to take part in the One Tonne Challenge, which aims to collect one tonne of unwanted clothes, donated by USW, in aid of Tŷ Hafan. Collection bins are available across all campuses to donate your clothes, located at:

  • Cardiff: Library, The Street, Fashion hub (4th floor)
  • Treforest: Library, accommodation office, Brecon Block entrance, Students’ Union
  • Newport: Library
  • Glyntaff: Library (lower Glyntaff), Alfred Russel Wallace building (Lounge area, ground floor)

Free lunchtime workshops will also be on offer for students and staff to learn how to revive and revamp clothes they no longer wear with simple design, alteration and customisation advice and inspiration from Love Your Clothes experts. These will take place from 23-26 January on all campuses (Exact locations and dates TBC).

Style Swipe pop-up: On Friday 26 January (11am-4pm) in the Atrium, some of the donated clothes will be available to purchase (similar to a Swap Shop model) for a donation to Tŷ Hafan. The re-designed items will also be available to purchase.

» Loop Course and Module Evaluation - Progress So Far

A message from the Pro Vice Chancellor for Learning, Teaching & Student Experience at USW.

“Thank you very much for your engagement with our Loop course and module evaluation so far. In just two weeks we have had over 4,000 course and 12,000 module evaluations completed.

“That is a great start, and we hugely appreciate it. There is still time to complete it if you have not done so already. We would like to see as many of you as possible complete Loop so that we are able to really understand where you think things are going well for you on your course, and where we need to improve. Once you complete it we will aim to give you and your peers on your course an initial response to your feedback before Christmas. So look out for that either in your classes or through Blackboard.

“I am also reviewing your Loop evaluations, as is your Students’ Union, to learn what we can do at University level to help support your course leaders and your lecturers to enhance your experience. Your views are important to us in making sure that we can deliver the best experience. We want you to be proud of your time as a USW student and for you to feel that you have been able to achieve your best. Your opinion counts in helping us do that.

“If you have not completed the survey, you can do so here: http://loop.southwales.ac.uk/.

“Many thanks for taking the time to do so, and best wishes for the rest of the term.”

Ben Calvert
Pro Vice-Chancellor (Learning, Teaching and Student Experience)
