» Meeting House celebrates first 200 kilos of food banked!

Last term, the Chaplaincy’s Meeting House Group appealed for support for the new Foodbank opening in Rhydfelin. The response from across campus has been amazing! Students and staff of the University of Glamorgan have already invested more than two hundred kilos of dried and tinned food in the bank.

Like every UK Foodbank, the Rhydfelin project is a local response to families and individuals in need. It often takes a little time for Government agenices to provide long-term support when personal circumstances change. The Foodbank exists to bridge the gap, putting food on the table at the recommendation of caring professionals or by direct referrals from the benefit agencies.

Thanks to Glamorgan’s 207kg and donations from local churches and community groups, the Rhydyfelin foodbank now has the 1.5 tonnes needed to start making emergency food parcels, and to issue food vouchers to participating professionals. But the need for donations is not over! Once the Foodbank opens to clients, new deposits will be needed to replace the food given away. So once again, this term, students and staff are asked to donate, on a regular basis, non-perishable foods such as:

  • tinned food (meat, fish, vegetables, fruit, puddings etc.)
  • long-life liquids (UHT milk, fruit juice etc.)
  • dry food (tea-bags, sugar, breakfast cereal, pasta, rice etc.)

You can bring your donations to the Meeting House on the Treforest Campus, or to the Admissions Office in the Aneurin Bevan Building on the Glyntaff Campus, Room GT582.

Students are welcome to join the Meeting House Group.

» Pontypridd Foodbank - supported by the Meeting House Group

There are families struggling to put food on the table. Today. In the UK. For people on low incomes, a sudden crisis such as losing a job or a delay in benefit payments can mean that a family goes hungry.

UK Foodbanks work with local voluntary organisations to provide emergency food and support to people in crisis.

The Meeting House Group’s Foodbank collection is ready to receive your food donations now. If you are a student, you are also welcome to join the Meeting House Group.

» Chaplaincy seeks Volunteers for Treforest Campus Meeting House

Volunteers are sought to help with reception and hospitality duties at the Meeting House, the new Chaplaincy Centre on the Treforest Campus.

The Meeting House is the Chaplaincy’s new base on the Treforest Campus, on the north side of the campus just uphill from the Ferndale Building and the Brook Street gate. At the Meeting House, we offer the Welsh tradition of warmth, hospitality and welcome to the whole University community – and a vital part of that welcome is the role of Lay Volunteers.

Volunteers are needed on weekday mornings, afternoons and evenings to enable the Meeting House to offer welcome and hospitality to the individuals and groups who visit. Time spent volunteering at the Meeting House can be a valuable asset to show future employers when you come to seek a permanent position. If you want to know more, or download an application pack, find the full details on the Glam Edge website

Chaplaincy at the University of Glamorgan is a partnership between the churches and the University. It is an open and inclusive service to all staff and students irrespective of religion.

» BBC brings early Christmas to Glamorgan!

BBC Radio Wales, and the Chaplaincy to the University of Glamorgan, are celebrating Christmas on Tuesday 11th October – but we can’t do it without you! Please come and lend us your voice!

Radio Wales is coming to the brand-new on-campus Chaplaincy centre, The Meeting House, to record two acts of Christian worship on Tuesday 11th October, in an evening session of about 2 hours beginning promptly at 6 p.m. One will be broadcast at the end of October, and the other, a week before Christmas – hence the unusual date for carolling at the Chaplaincy.

But songs don’t happen without singers! All members and friends of the University Community – students, staff, spouses and supporters – are encouraged to bring their voices to this unique occassion. You don’t have to be an accomplished singer; every voice is welcome. To make this celebration the best it can be, the Chaplaincy is asking you to come along to a sing-through of the hymns we will use on one or other of the lunchtime rehearsals in The Meeting House:

  • 12.30 p.m. on Thursday 6th October;
  • 12.30 p.m. on Monday 10th October.

Please let us know if you will come – we need to be sure. You can contact the Chaplaincy by calling extension 4060, emailing chaplaincy@glam.ac.uk , or dropping in to The Meeting House – the new on-campus Chaplaincy centre, just uphill from the Brook Street gate of the Treforest campus, behind the Ferndale Building. On older Campus Maps it is marked X Block – Building 13.

The Radio Wales Celebration act of worship is broadcast every Sunday Morning at 07.30.
