» Interlink: Tim tells us about why volunteering at Raleigh International as helped him

Raleigh International How did you get interested in volunteering?

I attended the Volunteering Fair in the University in February, walked around and the gentleman from Raleigh International, who had previous done a placement, was very convincing! He explained to me that it was very good for your CV, and as it was subsidized I would never get another experience like it. I also saw the placement advertised at a Jobs Fair.

Why did you get involved?

I don’t see why more people don’t do it really – why laze around when you can help people? It makes you a more rounded person in my opinion. The Raleigh opportunity was very structured, so we were always busy and they were efficient and had good resources. International Development is hard to do – so I have learned. I’d like to start an Enterprise, to be my own boss – and I did make connections out in Tanzania.

What sort of volunteering have you been doing? For how long? Who do you do it with?

I carried out a Raleigh International placement in Nkalibo, in the Dudama area of Tanzania, in five villages of a rural area. I was teaching Sanitation and Hygiene classes to groups of Schoolchildren and adults, and training residents on cooking skills. We had five weeks training in Tanzania, and ten weeks overseas. Since coming home I have volunteered with my local Food Bank.

What do you get out of volunteering? Has volunteering helped you to do other things?

I was hoping to do internships, so it was a good thing to help me in terms of Logistics, working for a socially responsible company I might go on to work in a Charity, as I am interested in international development. I had volunteered with the Food Bank before going out, and I went back to that after coming home.

Have you used your volunteering on any of the following?
On your CV/job application : Yes
To talk about in an interview : Not yet but I will

What helps you to keep going?

At Raleigh we had Team Leaders, there to give advice.

Is there anything (including different volunteering) you would like to do in the future?

I’d like to run my own business, and investigate more charity work in the future.

If you’d like to get involved with volunteering take a look at Interlink’s page and get involved!
