» Transgender Day of Remembrance: November 20th

Transgender Day of Remembrance is an annual observance on November 20th that honors the memory of those whose lives were lost in acts of anti-transgender violence.

The LGBT*Q society will be hosting an event to coincide with this event. Everyone is invited to meet the Students’ Union, Treforest Campus or the Amphitheatre at the Hub (Treforest student halls) for 6.30pm.

There will be an introduction to the service, how the observance came to light and there will also be a reading of some names of people who have lost their lives due to hate crime.

» The Students' Union is recruiting Change Agents

Get involved in the enhancement of the student experience and academic quality by becoming a Change Agent and earn up to £200!

Change Agents are students in each region who conduct an annual research project on a subject of their choice based on academic themes. You can pick a theme identified within the Academic Manifesto and conduct research around this area on a regional basis. You will be supported by USW Students’ Union staff in your work.

This enables the Union to produce a report and issue recommendations of how academic experiences can be improved. The findings are reported to the Learning and Teaching Enhancement Committee and to the University Executive.

You will gain many valuable employability skills such as project management, research and communication and demonstrate active engagement in quality enhancement processes at USW. For more information or to apply, contact your Students’ Union, Treforest, or email jenny.catherine@southwales.ac.uk

» Women's Rugby Team Launch Charity Calendar

The Students’ Union’s South Wales Pirates women’s rugby team have produced a charity calendar to raise money for The British Heart Foundation.

Team Manager Carys Rhiannon (also known as Miss April), 23, came up with the idea in 2012. The calendar raised £700 for their three designated charities (Dementia UK, Practical Action & Meningitus UK) in its first year. This year, the girls are hoping to more than double that figure.

The calendar features 8 members of the team including Students’ Union President Carys Rhiannon. Team Captain Stacey Horne (also known as Miss June) said 'It was great fun and although the girls have only known each other for a short time, they were all willing to pitch in for such a great cause. Many of the girls have lost close relatives or friends to a Heart condition which makes it even more meaningful’.

The girls chose The British Heart Foundation as their charity after discovering one of their old team mates had a close relative pass away from a heart condition. They’ve also committed to delivering Heart Start courses across the South Wales region in the hope that more lives will be saved in future.

The Calendars are on sale for £3 and can be bought from USW Cardiff and Treforest Students’ Union Shops. You could also arrange for one to be sent to you in the post for £5 by contacting supres@southwales.ac.uk.
